A Russian Ka-52 attack helicopter was shot down by its own forces during an attempt to repel a Ukrainian drone strike on Russian territory, after a fighter jet allegedly mistook it for an enemy UAV and opened fire, The Insider reported on October 28
It marks the fifth friendly-fire loss of a Russian helicopter since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.
The Insider confirmed that both crew members were killed in the incident. This marks at least the 17th documented case of Russian aircraft being destroyed by friendly fire since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine—and the second such loss in 2025.

According to The Insider’s tally, Russia has lost 12 planes and five helicopters to friendly fire during the war, including Su-35 and Su-34 jets, an A-50 surveillance plane, and several Ka-52s, Mi-24s, and Mi-8s.
Previously, it was reported that Russia has announced the introduction of a new electronic warfare system named “Multik,” developed to counter FPV drones and intended for integration with helicopters and other military platforms.
