Russia Throws Thousands Into Assault Waves, Suffers Heavy Losses Across Eastern Front

Russia carried out a large-scale push along Ukraine’s eastern front between March 17 and 20, conducting hundreds of assault operations but failing to break Ukrainian defenses, according to Ukrainian military officials and defense reporting.

According to Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, Russian forces launched 619 assault actions over four days across multiple sectors of the frontline. Syrskyi said the attacks were repelled, forcing Russian units to regroup after failing to achieve their objectives.
“Russian military command threw tens of thousands of soldiers into so-called ‘meat assaults.’ Over four days of intense assault operations, the enemy lost more than 6,090 personnel killed and wounded,” Syrskyi stated.

According to Syrskyi, Russian losses exceeded 6,090 personnel killed and wounded during the four-day period, with total weekly losses estimated at around 8,710 troops. Ukrainian forces also reported the destruction of multiple pieces of Russian military equipment during defensive operations.
The main concentration of Russian efforts was recorded along the Pokrovsk and Oleksandrivsk directions, where the highest number of assaults took place. Additional pressure was observed near Kostiantynivka, with 84 assault attempts reported, while more than 150 engagements occurred across the Ocheretyne, Lyman, and Kupiansk sectors.
According to Syrskyi, fighting remained intense along the entire line of contact, with Russian forces attempting to achieve breakthroughs through repeated frontal attacks. Ukrainian forces, however, maintained defensive positions and, in some areas, transitioned to what Syrskyi described as “active defense,” conducting localized counteractions to regain initiative.

“In some sectors, high-intensity fighting continues, but the enemy is forced to regroup its forces,” he added. According to the Ukrainian military leadership, prior reinforcement of frontline units with personnel, weapons, and ammunition played a key role in stabilizing the defense during the assault phase.
Syrskyi also noted that Russian forces are preparing for renewed attacks, attempting to bring in additional units while relying on deteriorating weather conditions. Ukrainian officials say Russian planners expect poorer weather to reduce the effectiveness of Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance, drone operations, and artillery.
Separately, according to the DeepState analytical project, Russian forces have recently claimed limited advances in several areas, including Vovchansk and near Zalisnianske in the Donetsk region. Ukrainian operational command disputed reports of advances in the Kharkiv region, stating that Russian attempts to break through near Vovchansk were unsuccessful.

The reported escalation follows broader efforts by Russian forces to increase pressure along the eastern front in early spring. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly stated that such offensives rely on sustained manpower-intensive tactics rather than maneuver, resulting in high casualty rates without significant territorial gains.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Third Army Corps repelled a major Russian mechanized assault on the Lyman–Borova axis. The March 19 attack involved over 500 troops and dozens of vehicles but was stopped after a four-hour battle.
