A massive overnight missile and drone strike on Kyiv killed at least 24 people, including a 62-year-old US citizen identified as Grendy Frederick Glenn, and injured more than 134.

According to emergency responders, Glenn suffered a penetrating head and chest wound, along with an open fracture of the left shoulder.

The Russian assault, one of the deadliest in recent months, targeted residential areas across multiple districts of the Ukrainian capital.

UPD. As of 10:38 a.m. on June 18, the Ukrainian State Emergency Service reported that the Russian strike on Kyiv killed 24 people and injured 134 more. Rescue operations are ongoing.

Among the hit locations is a nine-story apartment building in the Solomianskyi district, where a ballistic missile reportedly punched through the structure from top to bottom.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with at least five residents still unaccounted for and believed to be trapped under rubble. Emergency services are working around the clock to sift through debris in hopes of finding survivors.

“We will continue clearing the rubble until we are certain everyone is safe and receiving the help they need,” said Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Klitschko added that emergency services are finding debris of cluster munitions in Nyvky in Kyiv.

“This is another evidence of the genocide that Russia is committing against Ukrainians,” Klitschko wrote.

According to Tkachenko, the June 17 assault included 175 drones, over 14 cruise missiles, and at least two ballistic missiles. Residential areas were deliberately targeted in what he described as “direct hits from top floors to basements.”

“This was one of the most brutal attacks on our capital. Entire apartment blocks have been destroyed. The enemy targeted the civilian population directly,” Tkachenko.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to the Russian attack, stating “I receive regular reports from Minister of Internal Affairs Klymenko and our military commanders on the aftermath of Russia’s massive strike. More than 440 drones and 32 missiles were used.”

He added that Kyiv faced one of the most horrific attacks and Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, and Kyiv regions were attacked.

“Right now in Kyiv, efforts are underway to rescue people from under the rubble of an ordinary residential building—it’s still unclear how many remain trapped. The Russians destroyed an entire section of the apartment block. In total, buildings in eight districts of Kyiv have been damaged,” Zelenskyy wrote.

Ukrainian President stated that response efforts are still ongoing after the strike on Odesa, emergency workers are operating at all the sites of impact and all the affected are receiving the necessary assistance.

“75 people have been reported injured. As of now, 15 people are confirmed dead. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Such attacks are pure terrorism. And the whole world, the United States, and Europe must finally respond as a civilized society responds to terrorists. Putin does this solely because he can afford to continue the war. He wants the war to go on,” Zelenskyy said.

“It is wrong when the powerful of this world turn a blind eye to it. We are in contact with all partners at every possible level to ensure an appropriate response. It is the terrorists who must feel the pain, not innocent peaceful people,” Zelenskyy concluded.

The worst destruction occurred in Solomianskyi and Darnytskyi districts, where local emergency hubs have been set up to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. In some locations, fires broke out as a result of the missile impacts, requiring aerial firefighting assistance.

“Now we are at one of the strike sites,” Tkachenko said in a video message. “Rescue workers, doctors, police, volunteers—all are working together to save lives. Thank you to everyone pulling people from the rubble, supporting each other, and standing strong despite everything.”

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that the Russian military attacked 27 locations in Kyiv during the night. More than 2,000 emergency personnel—including firefighters, police, medical staff, and utility workers—are involved in the response effort.

“The missile strike was so powerful that it tore through all nine floors of a residential building,” Klymenko said at the scene in Solomianskyi. “These rescue operations could last at least 24 hours.”

As of 9:28 a.m. Timur Tkachenko stated that the Russian strike killed 14 people and injured more than 99.

As of 2:10 p.m., Kyiv city police reported that the number of injured in the Russian strike increased to 139.

While Kyiv bore the brunt of the attack, other regions were also affected. In Odesa, one person was killed and 10 others wounded. Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts reported at least one injury each from falling debris or secondary explosions.

Earlier, Russian forces launched a drone attack on Kharkiv that killed at least three people and left 60 people injured, including nine children aged 2 to 15 years.
