Russian shelling temporarily cut electricity to mines in the Dobropillia community of the Donetsk region, trapping 148 miners underground, according to Mykhailo Volynets, head of the Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine on August 26.
“Due to Russian shelling, the mines in the Dobropillia community were left without electricity. A total of 148 miners remained underground,” Volynets reported on Facebook.
Local authorities reported that the attack, which occurred around 11:30 a.m., also caused civilian casualties above ground. One person was killed and three others wounded in the shelling.
By midday, power supply was restored, and evacuation procedures began. “All miners are now being brought to the surface. Electricity has been restored, and people are being taken out from two mines,” Volynets later confirmed in comments relayed by the Telegram channel Dobropillia Info.
Power outages at coal mines in eastern Ukraine have been a recurring threat since the full-scale invasion began, with previous strikes leaving hundreds of miners stranded until emergency crews restored ventilation and hoist systems.
Earlier, it was reported that Russian forces launched a missile strike on a US-owned civilian factory in Mukachevo, injuring 15 people (later updated to 19), despite the presence of around 600 employees who evacuated rapidly.
