Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has expressed hope that US President Donald Trump, in his talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, will be able to push the Kremlin leader to abandon “some of his absurd demands” regarding Ukraine. Sikorski’s remarks were cited by PAP.

He recalled that Trump initially “promised to resolve this war within 24 hours.” “We knew it wouldn’t be that simple,” he added.

Sikorski also stated that Trump should convince Putin to drop unrealistic demands, such as seeking control over all of Ukraine, demilitarizing the country, or planning further territorial conquests in the future.

“The success of Trump’s negotiations will be judged by the quality of the peace that is achieved,” Sikorski emphasized.

He added that the talks would serve as a test for Russia, given that Ukraine has agreed to a temporary 30-day ceasefire, while Moscow continues to set conditions—clear evidence that it does not want peace or genuine negotiations.

“We can clearly see who wants peace and who wants war. Russia aims to seize all of Ukraine by other means and would ideally like to neutralize half of Europe militarily. It won’t succeed, but that doesn’t mean Putin won’t try,” Sikorski concluded.

On March 11, following negotiations in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine agreed to an immediate 30-day ceasefire, contingent on Russia’s participation. Russian leader Vladimir Putin signaled conditional agreement to halting hostilities but insisted on guarantees that Kyiv “will not mobilize, train, or receive weapons” during the truce, while Trump, responding to Putin’s remarks, called them “very promising, but incomplete.”

On March 18, US President Donald Trump announced plans to hold a phone conversation with Putin to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and the status of occupied territories, as well as the future of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
