Swedish Bearings in Russian Drones Show Potential Gaps in Sanctions Enforcement

Swedish manufacturer SKF has come under scrutiny for bearings found in Russo-Iranian Shahed drones, with initial claims stating they were counterfeit. However, after a deeper analysis, SKF acknowledged that their app misjudged the authenticity of the bearings, which were later confirmed to be genuine products, Aftonbladet reported on October 1.
SKF’s press representative, Carl Bjernstam, clarified that the app used for authenticity checks may occasionally make mistakes, though most evaluations are accurate.
The confusion arose when Ukrainian officers, who dismantled the drones, strongly believed the bearings were genuine, citing the reliability of SKF products for military use, according to Aftonbladet.

Despite these discrepancies, Bjernstam emphasized SKF’s commitment to responsibility and their rigorous export controls.
The company insists that they make every effort to prevent their products from being misused but acknowledges the difficulty in monitoring products once they pass through multiple distributors, Aftonbladet reported.
Previously, it was reported that Sweden would provide Denmark with radar units and military-grade anti-drone systems in the wake of recent drone incursions that forced the closure of several Danish airports, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced.
