Poland’s Chief of the General Staff, General Wiesław Kukuła, has stated that preparations for war are being carried out against Poland, Rzeczpospolita reported on November 17.

Speaking to journalists, Kukuła stressed that Poland is now in a situation where its security depends on its own stance and its ability to deter a potential aggressor.

“The adversary has begun preparations for war. They are creating an environment here that aims to undermine public trust in the government, in key institutions such as the armed forces and the police, and to create conditions favorable for potential aggression on Polish territory,” Kukuła said.

He added that the world is often in what can be considered a “pre-war period,” and today is no exception. According to him, what matters is how the state manages this period, particularly through building an “effective deterrence policy,” based on both defense capabilities and the posture of citizens.

When asked whether the current situation is closer to a pre-war atmosphere or a new Cold War, Kukuła replied that it depends entirely on Poland’s response—and that of its allies.

He emphasized that the key question is “whether, as a society, as a state, or as NATO states, we provide a decisive response, essentially create Cold War 2.0—meaning that we invest heavily in defense capabilities and clearly signal that any attack on NATO states or on our territory will be met with a firm response and will carry enormous risks for a potential aggressor, namely the Russian Federation.”

Earlier, Poland’s top military command provided additional clarification on the Russian drone breach that occurred overnight on September 9–10, saying the incident posed a significantly greater threat than first understood.

Lieutenant General Maciej Klisz said that investigators determined several of the Russian drones that entered Polish airspace were equipped with explosive payloads—including drones previously assumed to be mere “decoys” designed to overwhelm air-defense systems.
