Trump Says Xi Agreed to Help End War in Ukraine After “Amazing” Talks in South Korea

US President Donald Trump said he and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to “work together to help end the war in Ukraine,” following talks between the two leaders in South Korea, Trump told reporters after the meeting on October 29.
“We talked about it for a long time, and we’re both going to work together to see if we can get something done. We agree that the sides are, you know, locked in and fighting, and sometimes you have to let them fight, I guess. Crazy. But he’s going to help us and we’re going to work together on Ukraine,” Trump said.
Trump also confirmed that the two discussed China’s purchases of Russian oil, but declined to share details. His comments come days after Washington imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil producers—Rosneft and Lukoil—which disrupted portions of crude deliveries to China and India.
The White House described the meeting as “amazing,” with Trump calling the results “outstanding.” “On a scale of one to ten, I’d give it a twelve,” he said, adding that the leaders reached consensus “on almost everything.”

According to Trump, Washington and Beijing are preparing to sign a one-year trade agreement, which will be reviewed annually. “I think it’s going to last a long time,” he said.
The Chinese side also pledged to curb fentanyl exports to the US, Trump said. “As you know, I imposed a 20% tariff on Chinese goods because of fentanyl. That’s a big tariff… I’ve now reduced it by 10%,” he noted, clarifying that overall tariffs on Chinese goods currently stand at 47%.
Trump added that China will immediately increase purchases of US soybeans and other agricultural products. “A huge amount of soybeans and other farm goods will be bought right now,” he said.

The president announced plans to visit China in April 2026, with Xi expected to visit the US later. It was the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since the trade war began.
The meeting lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes and ended without a joint press conference. Beijing has not yet commented on the outcome.
Earlier, US intelligence agencies concluded that Russia shows no signs of being ready to compromise on Ukraine, with Russian leader Vladimir Putin now “more dug in than ever,” according to a recent classified assessment shared with Congress.
