Ukraine Holds the Line on All Fronts, Reports Tactical Gains in Zaporizhzhia—General Staff

The situation along the front lines remains difficult, but Russian forces have failed to gain full strategic initiative and are suffering enormous losses for only minor territorial gains, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyy said on October 17.
“Ukrainian warriors have stopped the enemy’s spring-summer offensive campaign and continue to disrupt the Kremlin’s further plans by employing asymmetric measures to neutralize the adversary’s advantages in manpower and weapons,” Syrskyy wrote on Facebook in both Ukrainian and English.
According to the Commander-in-Chief, Russia’s plans to seize key terrain and populated areas remain unfulfilled, forcing Moscow to constantly revise and delay its objectives.
Despite fierce battles, Ukraine’s Armed Forces continue to hold the line in all directions, inflicting heavy losses on Russian troops and equipment.
In September alone, the Russian army lost nearly 29,000 personnel, 70 tanks, 65 armored vehicles, over 1,050 artillery systems, and six multiple rocket launchers. Since the beginning of the year, 2,060 Russian soldiers have been captured.

Syrskyy added that Ukrainian forces are maintaining effective active defense operations, including counteroffensive actions in several sectors.
“Our units are successfully executing assault operations to restore lost positions. In particular, Ukrainian warriors continue to push Russian invaders out of the Sumy region. Active operations are ongoing in the Pokrovsk district of the Donetsk region. We have achieved certain successes in regaining control over territory in the Zaporizhzhia region. There are also other sectors of the front where the enemy has made no gains,” he said.

He noted that Ukraine is conducting the most effective deep-strike campaign against Russian territory since the start of the war, targeting military infrastructure, logistics hubs, and energy facilities.
“Since the beginning of the year, successful fire strikes have been carried out against 45 facilities of Russia’s fuel and energy sector and military-industrial complex. As a result, overall production of fuels and oils in Russia has decreased by nearly 25%. The aggressor state loses over 46 million US dollars daily due to reduced exports of petroleum products,” Syrskyy reported.

Ukrainain Commander-in-Chief emphasized that these strikes have significantly hindered Russia’s ability to sustain combat operations, while Ukraine continues to receive positive signals from allies regarding new aid packages.
“There are grounds to expect the supply of high-precision weapons, such as Tomahawk cruise missiles and other advanced systems. Their use should oblige the Russian aggressor to cease hostilities and establish a just peace,” he said.
Earlier, Ukrainian forces liberated the villages of Shcherbaky and Mala Shcherbaky in the Zaporizhzhia region and regained partial control of Stepove.
