Ukraine Introduces First Batch of New Ballistic Sapsan Missile Complex
Ukraine’s military arsenal continues to evolve with the introduction of the Sapsan missile, a new weapon designed to strengthen the country’s strike capabilities.
The Sapsan is a small, fast cruise missile, offering a hybrid design that combines the functionality of a drone and a traditional missile. Unlike typical drones that fly at speeds of 150-200 km/h, the Sapsan can reach speeds of up to 700 km/h.
Developed as a response to Ukraine’s need for affordable, highly accurate long-range strike capabilities, the Sapsan boasts an innovative combination of inertial navigation and GPS guidance systems, ensuring greater accuracy compared to traditional drones. Its compact design, featuring a jet engine, allows the missile to travel long distances while maintaining its maneuverability.
In addition to the Sapsan, Ukraine has also introduced the Peklo, another advanced missile system designed to operate in conjunction with the Sapsan. While both share similar characteristics, the Peklo is tailored to address a wider range of strategic threats, providing further flexibility in Ukraine’s strike options.
Both missiles signify the country’s determination to enhance its military capabilities while circumventing limitations on traditional missile production.
Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Peklo rocket drone entered mass production, with 100 units manufactured in just three months. The drones are produced using 70% locally sourced components from both state and private companies.
Earlier this year, Ukraine successfully tested a new ballistic missile, marking a significant milestone in the country’s defense capabilities. President Zelenskyy highlighted the achievement during his speech at the Second International Defense Industries Forum in Kyiv.
