Ukraine Shares Maritime Drone Expertise with Arab Nations to Unblock Strait of Hormuz

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Kyiv is actively sharing its successful maritime drone expertise with Arab nations to help unblock the Strait of Hormuz, Hromadske reported on March 30.
During a recent visit to the Middle East, Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine’s asymmetric naval tactics and drone technology were key topics of diplomatic discussion. Responding to journalists' questions, he noted that Ukrainian expert groups traveled to the region to share their combat-tested experience, an effort for which local leaders and military personnel are very grateful.

When asked by Hromadske journalist whether Ukraine’s success in utilizing naval drones to reopen Black Sea trade routes from Russian naval blockade could be applied to the current blockade in the Persian Gulf, Zelenskyy was clear about Kyiv’s technical outreach.
“We raised this issue because it is painful and hot, as we can see, for the whole world, because there is an energy crisis,” the President explained. He emphasized that global partners recognize Ukraine’s unique capabilities, adding, “They know that they can count on our expertise in this area.”
Spearheaded by indigenous surface vessels like the MAGURA V5 and Sea Baby, Ukraine’s strategy effectively neutralized much of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and secured a vital maritime export corridor without relying on a conventional navy.
Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine is actively passing on the operational blueprint of how the Black Sea corridor functions. “They understand that our Armed Forces were very productive in unblocking the Black Sea corridor. We share these details,” he said.

While Ukraine is providing technical and tactical consultation on drone warfare, Zelenskyy clarified that direct physical intervention to secure the Middle Eastern waterway falls to other global powers.
“Regarding other directions concerning Hormuz—in my opinion, the United States of America is dealing with this,” Zelenskyy concluded. “We are, of course, always ready to help our partners.”
The diplomatic effort to share maritime drone technology comes as Ukrainian officials increasingly draw parallels between the current global energy crisis and their own struggle against Russian blockades.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha recently stated that Iran’s attempts to block freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz are “painfully familiar” to Ukraine.
In 2022, Russia utilized its Black Sea fleet to sever Ukraine’s maritime trade, attempting to strangle the nation’s economy. Ukraine ultimately found a solution by developing indigenous naval drones like the MAGURA V5 to systematically hunt Russian warships, a blueprint that Gulf nations are now studying to protect their own critical shipping lanes.
