Ukrainian Armed Forces struck two key energy facilities deep inside Russia—the Korobkovsky Gas Processing Plant and the Yefimovka oil pumping station in the Volgograd region, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on October 9.

The Korobkovsky Gas Processing Plant, located in Kotovo and owned by Lukoil, is one of the largest natural gas and associated petroleum gas processing facilities in southern Russia, with a design capacity of 450 million cubic meters of gas and 186,000 tons of light hydrocarbon fractions per year.

The Yefimovka station, also in the Volgograd region, handles multiple oil and fuel pipelines with an annual throughput of 50 million tons.

Satellite data shows the latest Volgograd strikes occurred roughly 505 kilometers from Ukraine’s border.

Explosions and fires were recorded at both sites, according to satellite imagery and local reports. The full extent of the damage remains unclear. Ukraine’s military said the operation was part of ongoing efforts “to degrade Russia’s military and economic potential and bring an end to its armed aggression.”

Local residents posted videos and photos showing flames rising from the Korobkovsky plant. Russia’s governor of Volgograd region, Andrey Bocharov, confirmed multiple fires broke out at fuel and energy facilities after what he called a “massive drone attack.” He did not specify which enterprises were hit.

Russian outlet Astra cited residents who said the Lukoil plant had caught fire, a report supported by NASA’s FIRMS fire-monitoring satellites, which also detected fires at the Yefimovka oil pumping station belonging to Transneft-Privolga.

The Yefimovka station serves as a critical junction on the Kuibyshev–Tikhoretsk pipeline, used to export Russian oil through the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses shot down 19 Ukrainian drones overnight, nine of them over the Volgograd region.

According to the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation, both sites are considered critical to Russia’s oil and gas supply chain, processing and transporting gas condensate, and producing feedstock for the chemical industry. The Korobkovsky plant also contributes to fuel supply for both domestic markets and export.

Earlier, reports emerged that the Kirishi oil refinery, one of Russia’s largest, is expected to take about a month to resume full operations of its most productive crude distillation unit, CDU-6, following a drone attack and fire on October 4.
