According to Suspilne Culture, this year’s competition included more than 2,000 submissions first aired in 2025, with over 900 industry professionals participating in the voting process.
The film is nominated in six major categories, including Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary, Best Documentary, Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Cinematography, and Outstanding Editing.
Academy President and CEO Adam Sharp said this year’s nominees “represent a dynamic spectrum of voices and perspectives shaping the future of news and documentary filmmaking” and help deepen understanding of major global issues, Suspilne reported.

Christine Chin, head of the documentary awards division, highlighted the range of storytelling among nominees, noting that they span “from deeply personal stories to large-scale historical investigations” that challenge established narratives and amplify underrepresented voices.
Chernov’s film competes alongside a diverse group of international documentaries across categories, including works focused on political repression, environmental issues, war, and social justice.
The News & Documentary Emmy Awards ceremony will take place in New York over two days, with news categories presented on May 27 and documentary awards on May 28 at the Frederick P. Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the outlet reported. Both ceremonies will be streamed online.

The Emmy nominations add to a growing list of international recognition for Chernov’s work.
Earlier, the film earned the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Documentary Screenplay, with Mstyslav Chernov receiving the honor for his script for 2000 meters to Andriivka. The project competed against other notable documentaries, including Becoming Led Zeppelin and White with Fear.
Chernov was also recognized alongside cinematographer Alex Babenko with an award from the American Society of Cinematographers in the documentary category.

About 2000 meters to Andriivka
The documentary tracks a Ukrainian platoon as it pushes through a densely fortified stretch of forest in an effort to retake the strategically significant village of Andriivka from Russian forces. Moving alongside the soldiers, the filmmaker captures their advance across a shattered landscape, where each step underscores the enduring and uncertain nature of the war.
Filming started in September 2023 and lasted for nearly eighteen months. As with Chernov’s previous work, the project was produced in collaboration with Frontline and the Associated Press, with an emphasis on documenting Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
