US Envoy Witkoff Announces “Big Signal” Meeting With Ukrainians in New York

US special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed this week that he will hold meetings with Ukrainian representatives in New York, while also emphasizing that Washington continues direct talks with Moscow as part of efforts to bring Russia’s war against Ukraine to an end, Reuters reported on August 27.
“I’m meeting with the Ukrainians this week. So I will be meeting with them this week in New York, and that’s a big signal. We talk to the Russians every day,” Witkoff said.
The envoy suggested that Russian leader Vladimir Putin may be seeking a way to end the war.
“I think he has made a good faith effort to engage. He certainly did at the Alaska summit. But it’s a very complicated conflict,” Witkoff noted.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump met separately with Putin in Alaska and with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington.
Trump has said he intends to bring both leaders together, first for a bilateral and then for a trilateral meeting that would include him personally.

Witkoff hinted that Trump’s direct involvement may be necessary to close a deal.
“My own opinion is that the President is going to be needed at the table to finish a deal,” he said.
Trump, who has promised a rapid end to the war since taking office, recently warned Moscow of “major consequences” if it fails to pursue peace talks.
He also suggested that some form of land-swapping or territorial compromise may ultimately be required.
Earlier, Zelenskyy held talks with Keith Kellogg, Special Representative of the US President for Ukraine, addressing the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, security and defense cooperation, and ways to maintain pressure on Russia.
“Good meeting with the Special Representative of the US President, General Keith Kellogg,” Zelenskyy said. “Ukraine is extremely grateful to the United States for its support, and we value that President Trump is so determined to achieve real peace.”
