Volgograd Oil Refinery Hit in Overnight Drone Strike—Fire Erupts at Lukoil Facility

Attack drone strikes reportedly targeted the Lukoil oil refinery in the Russian city of Volgograd, according to the Crimean Wind monitoring group on October 15.
The refinery, operated by Russia’s energy giant Lukoil, reportedly caught fire after being hit by several drones.
Videos shared by local residents showed a large glow and smoke rising from the direction of the refinery, while multiple explosions were reported on social media channels.
Russian officials later confirmed that a drone attack had indeed taken place. Volgograd region governor Andrey Bocharov claimed that drone debris had fallen in the village of Kirova in the Svetloyarsky district, located near the refinery.
However, according to Militarnyi, given Bocharov’s record of spreading disinformation and downplaying previous confirmed strikes, it remains possible that the refinery itself sustained direct damage.
The Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka facility is the largest oil producer in Russia’s Southern Federal District, with an annual refining capacity of about 14.8 million tons. The plant sits roughly 475 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Earlier, the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicted that Ukrainian drone strikes would suppress Russian refinery processing rates until at least mid-2026.
Since August, Ukraine has launched at least 28 attacks on key Russian refineries, reducing crude processing by 500,000 barrels a day and contributing to gasoline shortages in several regions, including Crimea.
