Ukraine’s Railways Launch Online Memorial to 1,220 Rail Workers Killed in Russia’s War

Ukrainian Railways Ukrzaliznytsia has launched an expanded digital memorial platform titled “Train of Iron Memory” to honor the 1,220 railway workers who have lost their lives since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Announced on Facebook on November 4 to coincide with Ukraine’s national Railway Workers’ Day, the initiative is integrated into a broader support network managed by the state railway operator to assist staff and families directly impacted by ongoing Russian aggression.
We bring you stories from the ground. Your support keeps our team in the field.
The memorial webpage serves as a dedicated archive and public tribute to rail employees who died while maintaining vital transport routes or serving in the armed forces.
In an official appeal to the public, Ukrzaliznytsia wrote, “Stop for a moment. Remember those taken by the war. They remain part of our family forever.” Beyond preserving personal stories and honoring sacrifice, the broader platform provides direct resources, social assistance, and targeted outreach for the surviving families of deceased workers.
Railway Workers’ Day is officially observed in Ukraine every November 4, following an executive presidential decree established on July 15, 1993, and subsequently updated on December 11, 2002.

The date carries historical significance for the nation’s transit network: on November 4, 1861, the first passenger train arrived in Lviv, linking modern Ukrainian territory to Vienna, Kraków, and Przemyśl.
This international connection marked the official start of rail operations in the region, predating the Odesa–Balta line built five years later.
On October 29, a Russian jet-powered drone struck a civilian passenger train at the railway station in Dnipro, killing 14 people and injuring 10 others.
The strike hit a platform where an electric train bound for Zaporizhzhia was located, damaging rail infrastructure and prompting local authorities and Ukrzaliznytsia officials to confirm casualties among individuals present on the platform during the attack.
