Russian forces struck a shopping center in Kharkiv with a combat drone on August 27, killing a 40-year-old man and injuring four others.

The attack hit the shopping center in Kharkiv’s Osnovianskyi district during a large-scale Russian drone attack on Ukraine, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported.

“The enemy struck the Osnovianskyi district with a combat drone. A shopping center in the Osnovianskyi district was hit. We are receiving reports of casualties as a result of the strike,” Terekhov wrote.

Kharkiv Regional Military Administration head Oleh Syniehubov later confirmed that the attack had resulted in a fatality.

“According to updated information, the enemy attacked a shopping center in Kharkiv’s Osnovianskyi district with a drone. A 40-year-old man is currently known to have been killed,” Syniehubov said.

By 1:06 p.m. local time, authorities reported that the number of people injured in the strike had risen to four.

Emergency services remained at the scene, while an evacuation of people from the affected area was underway.

The Kharkiv strike comes amid a growing pattern of Russian attacks on shopping centers and other busy civilian commercial facilities across Ukraine.

Just two days earlier, on August 25, Russian forces attacked a shopping and entertainment center in Slobozhanske in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, damaging the building and triggering two fires—one inside the complex and another nearby. Emergency crews later extinguished both blazes, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES).

That attack followed an even deadlier strike on Kryvyi Rih’s largest shopping complex days earlier. Russian drones hit the busy civilian facility in broad daylight, setting it ablaze and killing 16 people. At least 130 others, including 23 children, were injured in the attack.
