Seven Employees Killed, Dozens Injured in Russian Strike on Metinvest Plant in Zaporizhzhia

A Russian ballistic missile strike overnight targeted the Metinvest industrial site in Zaporizhzhia, killing seven employees and injuring 21 others, Metinvest Group Press Office reported on August 11.
This strike was a part of a massive bombardment across Ukraine, in which Russia launched Zircon anti-ship missiles, Iskander-M and North Korean KN-23 ballistic weapons, alongside 120 attack drones. While the strikes wrought severe devastation and multiple civilian casualties in Zaporizhzhia, the Kyiv region was also heavily targeted. Missile impacts ignited commercial warehouses and struck the grounds of a children’s hospital.

The attack struck as workers were heading to emergency shelters immediately following an air-raid alert. The company expressed its condolences, stating that the loss of the seven Zaporizhstal team members is a massive blow to their families and loved ones.
The 21 injured colleagues are currently receiving all necessary medical assistance, and the company remains in contact with the families of the victims to provide support during this incredibly difficult time, the press service reported.
“The civilian industrial facilities in Zaporizhzhia, which provide jobs for tens of thousands of people and produce vital metallurgical and coke-chemical products, sustained severe damage in the strike,” the company wrote.
The Russian attack heavily damaged energy units, general plant infrastructure, and the main and auxiliary capacities of the coke and blast furnace production lines.
As a result, operations at the primary metallurgical combine have been completely suspended, while other associated production sites have been forced to operate at reduced capacity, according to the company.
Specialists are currently on-site assessing the full extent of the destruction, evaluating the possibilities and timelines for recovery, and conducting necessary emergency repair work. Metinvest extended its gratitude to the plant’s internal services, emergency responders, and city services involved in mitigating the aftermath and assisting the victims.
In mourning for the deceased employees, flags across Metinvest enterprises in Zaporizhzhia have been lowered to half-mast today and tomorrow, the press office stated.
The attack on the industrial plant followed a heavy bombardment of the city just one day prior. On August 10, Russian forces struck Zaporizhzhia with guided aerial bombs (KABs), injuring at least 24 civilians—including a 10-year-old girl who was hospitalized in serious condition.
The daytime strike damaged a five-story residential building, ignited multiple fires, and cut power to roughly 7,500 residents, prompting the regional prosecutor’s office to open a war crimes investigation into the attack.
