Ukraine has secured the return of seven civilians who had been unlawfully held in Russia since 2022, including a volunteer from the “Tyra’s Angels” unit who was captured alongside Ukrainian paramedic Yuliia “Tyra” Paievska during the siege of Mariupol, Ukraine’s Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets announced on June 27.

According to Lubinets, the release was achieved through what he described as direct humanitarian engagement with Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova.

The group consists of Ukrainian civilians aged between 35 and 66 who were detained by Russian forces during the occupation of Mariupol, parts of the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk regions, as well as Bucha district in Kyiv region.

Among those released was a man abducted from his home because his sons serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Another was detained while traveling to work on February 24, 2022, the day Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

The group also includes a volunteer who joined the Tyra’s Angels medical evacuation unit in Mariupol in 2022. He was captured alongside Yuliia “Tyra” Paievska, the Ukrainian military medic who was released from Russian captivity in June 2022.

“This is the result of my direct humanitarian work with the Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova. Special thanks to the Security Service of Ukraine, the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, and all other agencies working within the Coordination Headquarters,” Lubinets said.

The commissioner added that the returned civilians will undergo the necessary procedures and receive support to restore their rights following years of detention.

“Ukraine will not stop fighting for the return of every man and every woman. Civilians and military personnel. Those illegally detained in 2014 and those deprived of their freedom by Russia after the start of the full-scale invasion,” Lubinets said.

According to Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova, Russia also received seven civilians from Ukraine as part of the humanitarian exchange, including five residents of Russia’s Kursk region and two citizens from other Russian regions.

The civilian exchange took place one day after Ukraine and Russia conducted another prisoner-of-war exchange, during which 160 Ukrainian service members were returned home.
