Estonia’s Defense Minister, Martin Herem, revealed plans to construct roughly 150 military bunkers across the northeastern region of Ida-Viru County.

The construction forms part of the broader Baltic Defense Line initiative, according to ERR on October 28.

Under the current layout, 100 of these structures are designated for state-owned territory, while around 50 will stand on municipal or privately held land.

Placing installations on private real estate requires formal agreements with property owners. Government officials are considering various options to resolve property usage, including financial compensation for inconveniences, land leasing, or outright purchasing of the needed parcels.

“But, according to my information, currently there are no large-scale plans for the state to acquire a wider belt,” Herem added.

Estonia’s bunker project aligns with broader regional efforts, following Finland's completion of a major fencing project along its own border with Russia.

Finland completed roughly 200 kilometers of new fencing along selected sections of its border with Russia as part of a broader effort to harden NATO’s eastern frontier. Launched in 2023, the project cost approximately $413 million and featured a tall metal mesh fence equipped with surveillance cameras, lighting, loudspeakers, and an adjacent patrol road for border guards.

Finnish authorities originally initiated the construction to prevent unauthorized crossings, but the initiative ultimately became part of a wider regional push among northern and eastern European nations to fortify their borders facing Russia and Belarus.
