Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a conversation with Romanian President Nicușor Dan on May 29 following an incident where a Russian drone crashed into a residential building in the city of Galați.

During the overnight attack on southern Ukraine, the drone crossed the border and struck a ten-story apartment block, causing a fire and injuring two civilians, according to NV.

"I expressed support to Romania on behalf of all Ukrainians and wished the victims of the overnight Russian drone strike on a residential building in Galați a speedy recovery. It is important that there is a principled, operational, and strong reaction from Romania to what happened," Zelenskyy stated regarding the situation.

The Ukrainian president expressed solidarity with the victims and emphasized the importance of a unified response to the security threats posed by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. During the call, both leaders discussed ongoing coordination between their military teams to bolster regional security.

"Since the night, our military has been in contact, and we have now discussed further interaction at the level of our teams. We will be in constant communication with Romania and will continue to work together to protect lives from all potential Russian threats," the Ukrainian head of state added.

The incident has triggered widespread international concern, as it marks a notable breach of airspace in a NATO-member country. Romanian officials reported that the drone was tracked by radar, but the limited timeframe for reaction made interception difficult.

Following the event, Romanian authorities and international partners have condemned the incursion, with discussions regarding potential diplomatic and security measures currently underway.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced that the drone that struck a high-rise building in the city of Galați carried at least 30 kilograms of explosives, according to the Romanian outlet Digi24.

Separately, Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu stated that, in response to the incident, the country will request that NATO expedite the delivery of air defense systems.

Previously, Nicușor Dan noted that the drone changed its trajectory after being struck in Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine is prepared to support Romania in protecting its airspace.
