Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen officially submitted her government’s resignation to His Majesty the King on Wednesday morning, following a bruising general election that left both major political blocs short of a majority, the BBC and the Danish Royal Palace reported on March 25, 2026.

Despite Frederiksen’s Social Democrats remaining the largest party with 21.9% of the vote, the performance marks the party’s weakest showing since 1903. The left-wing “red bloc” secured 84 seats, while the right-wing “blue bloc” clinched 77, leaving both sides well short of the 90 seats required to govern the 179-seat Folketing.

This political deadlock has thrust former Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and his centrist Moderates into the role of kingmaker. Rasmussen, who holds 14 crucial seats, has expressed a preference for a government formed across the political center, signaling a potential departure from traditional bloc politics.

The election was called early by Frederiksen in a gamble to capitalize on her handling of US President Donald Trump’s renewed demands to acquire Greenland—a standoff that saw Rasmussen go viral for a “fist-bump” meeting with US Vice President JD Vance. However, the campaign was ultimately decided by domestic anxieties rather than high-stakes geopolitics, BBC wrote.

Danish voters prioritized the rising cost of living, economic stability, and environmental concerns, specifically the contamination of drinking water by pesticides from the country’s massive pig farming sector. Negotiations to form a new coalition are expected to be grueling and could stretch for weeks as Rasmussen weighs his “middle-ground” leverage.

“After explaining the election results and the parliamentary situation, the Prime Minister submitted the government’s resignation and advised that representatives of the political parties that have been elected to the Folketing should now be given the opportunity to speak about the upcoming government formation,” the Royal Palace Press Office wrote.

The political transition in Copenhagen follows a period of intense international leadership for Frederiksen, who previously led Denmark into the EU Council Presidency with a focus on scaling up European defense production.

Under the guidance of Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Denmark has pioneered the direct investment in sovereign defense industries, a strategy Frederiksen sought to leverage during the 2026 campaign to bolster her “crisis-manager” image.
