An Australian E-7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft has arrived in Poland to assist NATO operations and provide support to Ukraine, according to the Polish Minister’s of Defense post on X on July 31.

The aircraft, which is set to begin its mission from the 32nd Tactical Air Base in Łask, is primarily tasked with airspace control and coordination of air operations along the eastern flank of the Alliance. This marks the first deployment of the E-7A Wedgetail directly from Polish territory.

In addition to its NATO responsibilities, the aircraft will also provide vital reconnaissance data to Ukraine, likely focusing on identifying, tracking, and targeting during mass Russian missile and drone strikes to enhance Ukraine's air defense capabilities.

This is not the first time the Australian Wedgetail aircraft has supported Ukraine—one such aircraft already conducted reconnaissance missions from Germany in 2023, Militarnyi reports.

The E-7A Wedgetail, which belongs to the Royal Australian Air Force, is equipped with a state-of-the-art radar with long-range detection, secondary radar systems, and tactical voice communication tools. These systems enable effective early air warning and combat coordination, essential in modern warfare, according to Militarnyi.

Unlike traditional aircraft in this role, the E-7A is fitted with a fixed active phased array antenna that electronically scans targets, replacing the conventional rotating radar, thus ensuring faster and more accurate target detection.

Originally developed for the Australian Air Force under the Wedgetail program, the E-7A model has also been adopted by Turkey (E-7T), South Korea, and the United Kingdom (Wedgetail AEW1).

Earlier, it was reported that the first shipment of M1A1 Abrams tanks pledged by Australia has arrived in Ukraine, According to the Australian Department of Defense. The delivery includes five of the 28 tanks promised under the military aid package announced in July 2023.
