Explosions Rock Russian Resort City of Sochi as Drones Hit Oil Depot Near Airport

In the early hours of August 3, a drone strike targeted an oil depot in the Adler district of Sochi, a resort area near Sochi International Airport. The attack ignited a large fire and prompted temporary flight restrictions at the airport.
According to local Russian officials, including Sochi Mayor Andrei Proshunin and Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratiev, debris from drones struck a fuel tank at the site, causing it to ignite.

Emergency crews were deployed to contain the fire, involving over 120 personnel and more than 30 firefighting units.
The strike was later confirmed by Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, who reported that the oil depot in Sochi was on fire.
The oil depot targeted has been identified by Russian outlet Astra as a Rosneft-operated facility, “Rosneft-KubanNefteProdukt,” situated on Aviatsionnaya Street.
The depot reportedly consists of 41 tanks with a total storage capacity of over 31,000 cubic meters. The fire broke out in a tank holding approximately 2,000 cubic meters of fuel.
Due to the proximity of the site to the airport, Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsiya temporarily suspended arrivals and departures at Sochi International Airport.
Air raid sirens were heard throughout the region, and public announcements warned of drone threats. Witnesses reported hearing more than 20 explosions during the attack.

In addition to the primary strike on the oil depot, drone debris reportedly caused minor damage to several garages and a small commercial building nearby.
Separately, the city of Voronezh also came under drone attack the same night. According to Governor Alexander Gusev, private homes and outbuildings were damaged, and several vehicles were affected. Four civilians sustained injuries — three were hospitalized, including a man with burns, while another woman received on-site medical assistance.
Earlier on August 2, multiple drone strikes targeted industrial and military-linked facilities across Russia, including an oil refinery in Samara and a defense communications plant in Penza. The attacks prompted emergency responses, partial airport closures, and mobile internet restrictions in several regions.
