French President Emmanuel Macron has said Western nations are prepared to increase pressure on Russia if ongoing negotiations do not produce results, according to the statement published on BFMTV on August 19.
Speaking to reporters in Washington, Macron stated: “If this process were refused, we are also all agreed that we will have to increase sanctions and, in any case, adopt a posture that places more pressure on the Russian side.”
That night, a meeting took place at the White House between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders. All of them discussed ways to end the war in Ukraine.

Macron emphasized that unity among allies remained critical, noting that coordinated measures would be necessary if Russia declined to engage in constructive dialogue. The statement follows earlier discussions within the European Union about tightening economic restrictions on sectors tied to the Russian defense industry.
The warning comes as negotiations continue with no breakthrough in sight, and as Western officials consider additional measures to limit Russia’s ability to finance and sustain its war against Ukraine.
Earlier it was reported that preparations for Ukraine’s security guarantees have been underway for months, with support from 30 nations, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said.
He underlined that these guarantees were not improvised but had been carefully developed through a series of negotiations among allies.
