Meloni Reaffirms Support for Ukraine as Italy Approves New Defense Package

The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, approved a new package of military assistance for Ukraine.
The decision, reported by Ansa on December 29, comes despite opposition from the right-wing League party, which has consistently voiced skepticism about continued military support for Kyiv.
Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to Ukraine, stating that the country will continue its support “for as long as necessary.”
Throughout 2025, the Italian government has faced increasing internal disputes over its Ukraine policy.

In early December, Italy signaled a shift in its stance on military assistance, stating that it considered participation in NATO’s new US-led weapons procurement program for Ukraine “premature,” citing ongoing discussions around a potential ceasefire.
Italy also reportedly joined Belgium in opposing a European Union plan to use approximately $246 billion in frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine, according to an internal document cited by Politico. The document indicates that Rome is concerned about the legal and financial implications of such a step, and has urged a more cautious approach.
Previously, it was reported that military support for Ukraine in 2025 risks dropping to its lowest level since the start of the full-scale war.
