Rosatom Executive Tyunin Becomes 20th Top Russian Manager to Die Mysteriously

In Moscow’s outskirts, the body of Alexander Tyunin, 50, general director of NPK Khimprominzhiniring, a subsidiary of the state-owned nuclear giant Rosatom, was discovered near his car on a roadside close to a forest. A hunting rifle and a handwritten note were found nearby.

According to The Moscow Times on September 19, the letter stated that Tyunin had decided to end his life after five years of worsening depression, which he described as “becoming worse every year.”

While Russian state media TASS hastened to label the case a suicide, the death of Tyunin adds to a growing and troubling list of unexplained fatalities among high-ranking executives in Russia’s energy, nuclear, and industrial sectors since the full-scale war against Ukraine began.

Tyunin had headed Khimprominzhiniring since April 2016, overseeing production of carbon composites for aviation, energy, and industry. The company was later folded into Umatex, a Rosatom division specializing in advanced materials that was hit by US sanctions in February 2023.

Tyunin is now the 20th top Russian manager to die under mysterious conditions since February 2022. On September 8, in Kaliningrad region, authorities discovered the decapitated body of mining and fertilizer executive Alexei Sinitsyn. In August, the sudden deaths of Dmitry Osipov, chairman of Uralkali, and Mikhail Kenin, founder of construction giant Samolet, also raised questions.

Previously, it was reported that Russia’s economy has slowed to a near standstill, with Sberbank CEO Herman Gref warning of “technical stagnation” and GDP growth approaching zero, signaling mounting pressure on industries and households alike.
