Sweden Boosts Foreign Aid by $160M in Strategic Shift to Support Ukraine

Sweden is undertaking a major revision of its foreign aid strategy, freeing up an additional $160 million to bolster support for Ukraine and respond to urgent humanitarian crises around the world, according to European Pravda on July 1.
According European Pravda, citing the announcement of Swedish government, the changes being made to the aid budget are deemed necessary in light of the shifting global landscape.
“We live in a turbulent world with multiple overlapping crises. Human suffering is immense — especially in Ukraine. That’s why Sweden is launching a comprehensive review of its aid priorities for 2025,” said Minister for Foreign Trade and International Development Cooperation, Benjamin Dusa.
The reallocation comes at a critical time, as recent cuts to US foreign assistance have intensified pressure on global aid efforts. Forssell stressed that while Sweden cannot replace the scale of US funding, it is committed to doing its part.

“Sweden cannot compensate for the loss of US support, but we must do everything we can to help Ukraine and save lives,” minister stated.
Importantly, the revision will affect all geographic aid allocations except those designated for Ukraine and neighboring regions.
“A key reason for freeing up funds is the continued need to support Ukraine. Supporting Ukraine and nearby regions is vital for Europe,” Dusa emphasized.
Earlier, it was reported that Sweden is allocating around $2.44 million to support the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine. The funding will go toward launching a new digital case management system designed to boost the efficiency of investigations—especially those related to Russia’s war crimes.
