Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will visit Moscow on May 26 to discuss next steps in efforts to resolve the war between Russia and Ukraine, Bloomberg reported on May 24.

The visit follows the first direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in three years, held in Istanbul earlier this May.

In Moscow, Fidan is expected to meet with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, and convey Ankara’s position on the need for a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine. Talks are also planned with other senior Russian officials, including Vladimir Medinsky, who led the Russian delegation at the Istanbul negotiations.

While the Istanbul meeting marked a step toward renewed dialogue, its main outcome was an agreement on a large-scale prisoner exchange. Russian leader Vladimir Putin did not attend the talks, which were led by lower-ranking officials. French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot said that Russia has sent a technical delegation to Turkey for talks aimed at circumventing international sanctions.

Previously, Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has stated that Russia’s current strategy in peace negotiations appears focused on pushing the United States out of the process.
