Ukraine Puts Luhansk Region Under Its Fire Control as Drones Hammer Russian Logistics 205 km Deep

Operation “Logistics Lockdown” has rapidly entered an active phase. Ukrainian forces are now able to deploy Middle Strike drones at ranges exceeding 200 km on a sustained basis, targeting Russian logistics and military infrastructure.

Since the beginning of 2026, Russian forces have claimed at least twice that they had captured the entirety of the Luhansk region. The Ukrainian military says otherwise: a small portion of the region remains under Ukrainian control, and the situation remains unchanged. Now, the Russian forces may be facing new challenges in the region.

Deep into the Luhansk region

Ukrainian forces have struck Russian military logistics in the temporarily occupied areas of the Luhansk region, said fighters from Ukraine’s 3rd Assault Brigade’s Unmanned Systems Battalion. The significance lies not in the strike itself, but in the distance Ukrainian Middle Strike-class drones can cover.

The target was the Izvaryne border checkpoint, located more than 205 km inside the part of the Luhansk region under Russian control. In effect, the Ukrainian drone flew across virtually the entire region, as Izvaryne is located in its eastern part.

“In response to enemy claims of having fully occupied the Luhansk region, we are announcing an operation to control logistics routes in the region and Eastern Slobozhanshchyna ,” said 3rd Army Corps Commander Brig. Gen. Andrii Biletskyi. “Luhansk, Starobilsk, Alchevsk, Bryanka, and Kadiivka are now under the control of the 3rd Army Corps’ UAVs.”

During the operation, drone operators struck Russian armored vehicles and ammunition depots. In practical terms, the entire territory of the region is now becoming increasingly dangerous for Russian military cargo traffic, vehicle movements, and other logistical activity, including the transport of fuel and ammunition.

Russia faces a logistics lockdown

The case of the Luhansk region, where Ukrainian forces have effectively covered the entire region with Middle Strike drones, is one of the first examples of what is expected to become a full-scale approach across all occupied territories of Ukraine: extending coverage over the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions, while also targeting Russian forces in Crimea.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry says that strikes on Russian military logistics have an immediate impact on the number and effectiveness of assault operations. Attacks become less frequent, are more poorly prepared, and increasingly fail to achieve results.

Middle Strike drones are being used to establish control over roads, particularly major intercity routes used for transporting Russian cargo and heavy equipment. Over the past two months, hundreds of strikes have been recorded and confirmed, with Russian trucks burning across southern Ukraine.

The objective of Ukrainian strikes is to destroy the entirety of Russia’s offensive infrastructure: command posts, drone storage facilities, weapons depots, troop and equipment concentrations, fuel supplies, and heavy armored vehicles. By preventing the concentration of forces, Russia’s senior military leadership loses the initiative and is forced to focus on rebuilding logistics networks rather than conducting assaults.

A separate priority is the elimination of Russian air defense systems and launchers used for ballistic and other types of missiles. Unable to replace them quickly, Russia is left without both offensive capabilities for strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure and critical defensive assets.
