President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on May 22 that Ukraine’s northern frontier—specifically across the Rivne, Zhytomyr, and Volyn regions faces the renewed threat of a potential Russian offensive.

In response, local authorities are coordinating directly with state leadership to actively reinforce defensive borders, even as the Ukrainian Armed Forces have liberated and secured 590 square kilometers of territory since the beginning of the year.

The meetings followed recent defensive assessments conducted with local leadership in the Chernihiv and Kyiv regions to ensure comprehensive oversight of all strategic borders.

“Rivne region, Zhytomyr, Volyn region. We spoke today with the heads of communities, including about the protection of this northern direction. Given the threats that exist. Yesterday there were communities of Chernihiv and Kyiv regions, today – also this part of our state. We will not leave any direction without attention”, Zelenskyy said.

The strategic focus remains on combining military resistance with global diplomatic engagement to achieve stability. Ukrainian leadership expects an upcoming acceleration in negotiations concerning the peace process, specifically looking toward increased cooperation and dialogue with American counterparts.

“We are doing everything to activate our diplomacy, bring closer the end of the war, this is our first priority – obvious”, Zelenskyy noted.

According to state authorities, the current battlefield dynamics are progressively moving against the objectives of the occupying forces, reinforcing the impact of international sanctions.

“The trend – is definitely not in the interests of the occupier, we continue to increase the indicators of destruction of Russian personnel – this, together with sanctions of all forms, forces Russia to the choice of diplomacy”, Zelenskyy emphasized.

Diplomatic adjustments are also being prioritized within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide a new baseline for potential dialogue.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha previously expressed that the overall negotiation framework requires a renewed momentum, which could potentially be achieved through direct communication between the presidents of Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

In an address delivered on May 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Moscow was trying to drag Minsk deeper into the war.

In response, he stated that Ukraine possessed the capability to act preventively against Russian staging grounds and warned the de facto Belarusian leadership to stay “on its toes,” promising tangible repercussions for any hostile moves.
