Iran has stopped exchanging messages with the United States through intermediaries in protest of Israeli military operations in Lebanon and Gaza, the Iranian Tasnim News Agency reported on June 1.

The Iranian negotiating team suspended all indirect talks and text exchanges with Washington, stating that a ceasefire in Lebanon was a strict precondition for negotiations.

Iranian officials emphasized that no new dialogue will take place until Israeli forces immediately halt operations and completely withdraw from occupied areas in Lebanon, Tasnim News Agency wrote.

In response to the continued strikes, Tasnim reports that the Iranian Armed Forces and the allied “resistance front” are preparing to open new military fronts. This agenda includes plans to completely block the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint, and activate operations in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait to retaliate against Israel and its international supporters, according to Tasnim News Agency.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow maritime chokepoint connecting the Persian Gulf to the open ocean, acting as the primary transit route for roughly 20% of the world’s daily oil consumption. Iran’s restrictions and blockade of this vital corridor have previously disrupted international trade by halting crude flows, which immediately spiked global oil and LNG prices and forced importing nations to scramble for alternative energy supplies.

The situation follows an earlier report, which noted that the United States and Iran had reached an agreement in principle to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Reopening the channel would involve significant logistical challenges, including clearing sea mines and managing roughly 1,500 to 2,000 commercial vessels that have been trapped in the Persian Gulf since the waterway was closed.
