Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a forthcoming major development in defense cooperation with Germany during remarks to journalists on June 18.

The announcement is expected to be discussed at the NATO Defense Ministers meeting in Brussels, which will also host a session of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG), commonly known as the Ramstein format.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine expects discussions to include a new European anti-ballistic defense initiative aimed at strengthening regional security through joint defense production and intelligence sharing.

The President noted that Kyiv had originally proposed the creation of the integrated anti-ballistic defense network together with its European partners.

“First of all, this is a question of air defense, a question of Patriot [systems], and a question of anti-ballistic missiles. Roughly 9, 10, or 11 countries currently support these new packages. Hopefully, everything will succeed so that we receive such serious support from such a significant number of countries,” he said.

Broadening the scope of international military support, Zelenskyy also confirmed that allied nations have prepared new, comprehensive aid packages ahead of the UDCG meeting.

The primary focus of these discussions will center on reinforcing air capabilities, specifically Patriot systems and anti-ballistic missiles. Approximately nine to eleven countries are currently backing these critical defense initiatives, with Zelenskyy emphasizing his hope for successful coordination to secure serious support from a broad coalition of partners.

This initiative aligns with wider allied efforts to scale up localized military manufacturing within Europe. US President Donald Trump had previously planned to ask American defense companies to produce critical weapons, including interceptor missiles, under license directly in Europe and Ukraine to address severe air defense shortages.
