Russian Troops Expose Commanders for Throwing Them Into Deadly “Meat Assaults” Near Pokrovsk

Russian soldiers are complaining that their commanders are sending them on so-called “meat assaults” near Pokrovsk, according to a video published by Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces on Telegram on September 22.
In the footage, a soldier from Irkutsk shows the bodies of fallen comrades, claiming they were thrown into battle under Pokrovsk and used as expendable troops.
“This is yet another example of the Russian command’s disregard for the lives of its soldiers. They are promised big contract payments and humane treatment, but instead receive nothing and are immediately sent into battle—without equipment, without support, without assistance—straight into ‘meat assaults,’” Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces said.

Russia has increasingly relied on so-called “meat assaults,” throwing waves of poorly trained or penal troops into frontal attacks with little equipment, artillery, or support. Units are often sent straight into Ukrainian fire near hotspots such as Pokrovsk, used as expendable manpower to probe defenses or exhaust Ukrainian positions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on September 20 that counteroffensive operations continue in the Donetsk region, particularly near Dobropillya and Pokrovsk, where Ukrainian forces hold about 330 kilometers of territory and have liberated 160 kilometers. He added that Russia is trying to reinforce the area, including with the 61st Marine Brigade.
The spokesperson for the Joint Task Force “Dnipro,” Viktor Tregubov, said that there are now more Russian troops on the Pokrovsk front than the number of residents Pokrovsk had before the war. He noted that 110,000 Russian soldiers have been deployed there.
Previously, Russia’s top general has claimed Moscow’s forces are pushing forward across nearly every sector of the front in Ukraine, but Kyiv insists its defenders are holding and in some areas even clawing back ground. The contradictory reports underscore the fog of war surrounding the grinding battles in eastern Ukraine, Reuters reported on September 18.
