Bessent: Trump Administration Ready to Act as Russia “Despicably” Steps Up Attacks

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on September 1 in an exclusive interview with Fox News that “all options are on the table” as the Trump administration considers potential sanctions on Russia, following a renewed escalation of attacks on Ukraine.

“I think everything’s on the table,” Bessent said. Putin, since the historic meeting in Anchorage, since the phone call, when the European leaders and President Zelenskyy were at the White House the following Monday, has done the opposite of following through on what he indicated he wanted to do. As a matter of fact, he has, in a despicable, despicable manner, increased the bombing campaign.”

He added: “So I think with President Trump, all options are on the table, and I think we’ll be examining those very closely this week.”

The remarks come as Kyiv endured one of the largest combined attacks since the Alaska summit on the night of August 28. According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, 23 people were killed, including four children, and 53 were injured. Damage was reported across all districts of the capital, marking a new record for destruction in Kyiv.

The day before, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Russia continues to signal its intent to prolong the war against Ukraine rather than engage in peace talks proposed by the United States.

“Two weeks ago in Washington, it was stated that by this time the Russians should be ready for real negotiations—a meeting at the leaders’ level. Ukraine is definitely ready for this. But the only thing Russia is doing is investing further in war. All their signals point to that,” Zelenskyy noted.

On September 1, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin did not agree to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, nor was a three-way summit with US President Donald Trump planned.
